Marriages and betrothals can create alliances between rulers, turning a family decision into access to military support and obligations of your own. An alliance with a vassal can also keep that vassal out of factions against you. It is compelling for diplomacy that passes through people and succession: check who is actually allied, because a useful connection need not survive the next generation.
