The cramped household has rituals, teasing and an extraordinary capacity to make room for another child. It also survives through behaviour that can hurt the people inside it. Koreeda makes the daily evidence of affection convincing before asking whether affection is enough to justify the adults' choices. A rich, troubling found-family film, with poverty, neglect and exploitation preventing any easy promise of comfort.
