Ricky wants to belong; Hec would much rather be left alone. Being pursued through the New Zealand bush makes their incompatible habits a practical problem, then an oddly persuasive family language. The jokes do not require either of them to become a polished version of himself. Choose it for gruff affection and a young person's stubborn claim on a place in the world, with bereavement and animal harm among the rougher moments.
