A limited budget forces Oakland's management to ask whether the sport is valuing the wrong skills. The recruitment conversations make an unfamiliar statistical approach understandable through the people it overlooks. Its account of Billy Beane and the Athletics compresses a complicated real season, but the pleasure is watching an outsider argument become a way of building a team.
