Best Shows on Apple TV

Apple's subscription has a stronger range than its reputation for glossy sci-fi suggests. These are the series I would put first, ranked for their writing, performances, distinctive ideas and the strength of the viewing experience, rather than awards or popularity alone. Start with Severance for a mystery, Slow Horses for a brisk thriller or Ted Lasso for company. Pachinko and Drops of God are essential if you are happy with subtitles; Black Bird and Lessons in Chemistry offer a limited-series commitment. Comedy, documentary and newer discoveries sit alongside the big dramas. This selection covers shows included with the Apple TV subscription in the US, rather than everything available to buy or rent in the Apple TV app. It includes ongoing series and flags unfinished stories where that matters.
