Tears of the Black Tiger (2000)

The outlaw romance is rendered in colours so emphatic that the landscape seems to share the lovers' feelings. Wisit Sasanatieng's Thai film joins gunfights to a knowingly artificial melodrama about class and frustrated attachment. The stylisation is the invitation: it can be funny, beautiful and emotionally extravagant within the same scene.
