Remember the Night (1940)

A prosecutor's Christmas kindness towards a shoplifter becomes much harder to keep at a comfortable professional distance. Travelling home brings Barbara Stanwyck's guarded character into a family world whose hospitality has emotional consequences. Mitchell Leisen's film, written by Preston Sturges, moves between comic embarrassment and genuine sadness. Pick it for older Hollywood warmth that understands a holiday cannot simply cancel everything waiting afterwards.
