Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

by game_tinkerer  •
Red Dead Redemption 2
Game
9.3/10on IGDB
Released
The snowy Colter chapter gives you restricted routes, long rides and a tightly directed introduction to the gang. Chapter 2, at Horseshoe Overlook, is the useful point to reassess: the landscape opens into the hunting, chance encounters and camp life that give this western its particular richness. Allow several opening missions, not just the first ride. Deliberate movement and strict story-mission boundaries remain part of the game.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut (2021)

by game_tinkerer  •
Death Stranding: Director's Cut
Game
8.8/10on IGDB
Released
The opening region combines unfamiliar terminology with limited equipment, so the delivery system can initially feel more restrictive than expressive. Episode 3's Central Region is a much better test of the attraction: route planning, vehicles and developing infrastructure begin to work together. Reaching it can take many hours, especially with optional deliveries. The payoff is richer logistics, rather than the disappearance of walking or long cutscenes.

Yakuza 0: Director's Cut (2025)

Yakuza 0: Director's Cut
Game
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
Early crime-story exposition can hide the contrast that makes this action adventure special: serious melodrama sharing a city with ridiculous, generous side stories. Kiryu's Chapter 2 substories and the switch to Majima in Chapter 3 give a more representative sample. The Director's Cut is the current edition here. If the problem is the amount of dialogue or repeated street fighting, those remain substantial parts of the experience.

Hollow Knight (2017)

by game_tinkerer  •
Hollow Knight
Game
9.2/10on IGDB
Released
The muted Forgotten Crossroads and a limited opening moveset can undersell the variety of Hallownest. Reaching Greenpath after acquiring Vengeful Spirit, then earning the dash there, gives a better sense of the changing environments and connected exploration. On a first playthrough that can mean several sessions. Maps still require attention, and recovering from a death remains part of the adventure, so it is not a promise of easier travel.

Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix (2014)

by game_tinkerer  •
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
Game
8.4/10on IGDB
Released
Roxas's Twilight Town prologue spends a surprising amount of time on small jobs, tutorials and summer-holiday routines. Its conclusion and the return to Sora provide the clearer test of the game's expressive action combat and travelling party. Expect a multi-hour introduction rather than an extended opening cutscene. This is the HD Final Mix version; knowledge of the earlier stories helps, and the wider plot stays complicated.

Ōkami HD (2012)

by game_tinkerer  •
Ōkami HD
Game
8.8/10on IGDB
Released
A long, talkative introduction can conceal the pleasure of using a brush to repair and reshape a world. The early restoration work around Kamiki and Hana Valley, followed by Tsuta Ruins, gives the Celestial Brush more opportunities to connect exploration, puzzles and fighting. That is a fairer sample than the opening explanation alone. Dialogue and gentle teaching continue, so the later charm depends on enjoying the world as well as its pace.

NieR: Automata (2017)

by game_tinkerer  •
NieR: Automata
Game
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
The action-heavy factory prologue is unusually unforgiving about saving: dying before the Bunker can mean repeating a large section. Reaching the Bunker and then the City Ruins reveals the exploration, conversations and shifting perspectives that make the game more than that opening assault. Lowering difficulty for the prologue is a reasonable way past the barrier. Afterwards, saving still needs your attention; the game does not become a conventional checkpoint-driven action campaign.

Persona 5 Royal (2019)

by game_tinkerer  •
Persona 5 Royal
Game
9.4/10on IGDB
Released
The opening school days tightly control your schedule while introducing a large cast and several systems. Once the first Palace can be approached against a deadline and ordinary days offer choices, the appeal becomes clearer: balancing relationships, preparation and dungeon trips. Reaching that rhythm takes several hours, with further tutorials beyond it. The dialogue-heavy school drama remains central, so continue for the prospect of managing that life, not to escape it.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017)

by game_tinkerer  •
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Game
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
Early battles show only part of a combat system that eventually links party roles, Arts, Specials and elemental setups. The arrival of Chain Attacks during Chapter 3 is a meaningful point to reassess how those pieces interact. That is a substantial investment, potentially well beyond a couple of evenings. The tutorials can remain unhelpful and the anime comedy does not vanish, so the combat's growing depth needs to be the attraction.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

by game_tinkerer  •
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Game
9.4/10on IGDB
Released
White Orchard teaches an impressive number of systems in a relatively contained area, which can make the opening feel like preparation for a game elsewhere. Leaving it for Velen and following the early investigation towards the Bloody Baron gives the character writing and tangled local stories more room. That route can take several hours without clearing every marker. The 2015 game's investigative conversations become richer; its basic swordplay is still recognisably the same.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (2013)

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Game
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
A slow escort to Gran Soren can make this action RPG look more pedestrian than its creature-climbing battles suggest. Arrival at the capital gives you a better base for changing vocations, arranging a pawn party and taking on varied expeditions. Use that first capital visit as a practical reassessment point. The attraction is the combat and the uncertainty of travel; awkward quest communication and repeated journeys do not simply disappear.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)

by game_tinkerer  •
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Game
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
The original 2003 RPG keeps you on Taris for a long opening stretch, with relatively limited combat options. Escaping to Dantooine and beginning Jedi training changes character development, while the wider journey opens into more of the party adventure the premise suggests. This is a several-hour commitment, not a quick tutorial. Its underlying dice-based fighting and substantial dialogue remain, even once the setting becomes more varied.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (2017)

by game_tinkerer  •
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Game
8.4/10on IGDB
Released
The early perspective changes and Vaan's errands delay the system that makes this RPG particularly interesting: arranging a party's behaviour through Gambits. Meeting Balthier and Fran and learning that system in the waterways gives you a better sample than the opening alone. Useful options and a full party develop further afterwards. Try it for the pleasure of designing a team, with the remaster's speed options helping repeated travel rather than replacing strategic thought.

Monster Hunter: World (2018)

by game_tinkerer  •
Monster Hunter: World
Game
8.4/10on IGDB
Released
Story staging, base tours and gathering jobs can delay the satisfaction of learning a weapon against a substantial creature. The Great Jagras hunt begins a better test, with the following large monsters showing more of the preparation-and-mastery cycle. Choose ordinary early equipment if you want that learning curve; Defender weapons and Guardian armour are catch-up options. Menus, repeated hunts and awkward story co-op arrangements remain, so later freedom is not a cure for every objection.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered (2024)

by game_tinkerer  •
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Game
8.9/10on IGDB
Released
Childhood teaching and the early tribal storyline keep Aloy's world narrower than its machine-hunting premise suggests. Moving beyond the Proving towards a Seeker's wider journey gives you more room to study machines, target components and choose an approach. The payoff comes over the opening hours, not immediately after the childhood sequence. The remaster improves presentation, while familiar open-world errands and weaker human encounters remain.

The Evil Within 2 (2017)

by game_tinkerer  •
The Evil Within 2
Game
8.2/10on IGDB
Released
The first chapters lean on exposition and tightly staged horror, which can disguise the more flexible survival game ahead. Chapter 3's streets of Union provide the useful test: investigate signals, search houses, collect supplies and decide which dangers to approach. Getting there is a relatively bounded opening investment. Later sections alternate open areas with directed sequences, so expect a change in texture rather than permanent freedom.

Days Gone (2019)

by game_tinkerer  •
Days Gone
Game
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
A vulnerable character, an unimpressive bike and repeated introductory jobs can make the campaign feel smaller than its promise. Early camp reputation and practical bike upgrades improve the rhythm of travelling, scavenging and returning safely. The large horde set pieces take much longer to become a major focus, often tens of hours. This is the original campaign, including its PC release; the later strengths suit someone who already enjoys some of that road-trip routine.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018)

by game_tinkerer  •
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Game
7.9/10on IGDB
Released
Henry's restricted opening and conspicuous incompetence can make the first game difficult to read as a satisfying RPG. Reaching Rattay and training with Captain Bernard gives you a better foundation for testing its combat and everyday medieval routines. That milestone is several hours into ordinary play. Henry's development is a major attraction, but limited saving, demanding systems and the need for practice remain part of the bargain.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (2019)

by game_tinkerer  •
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Game
9.2/10on IGDB
Released
The opening switches between unfamiliar teenagers, story scenes and abstract-looking battles before showing how much control you will have over the order of discovery. Clearing the prologue scenarios and tutorial battles opens the character-selection and mode structure that makes its interlocking mystery rewarding. Give that setup several hours. Reading, revisiting scenes and keeping track of uncertainty remain the main activity, rather than giving way to a conventional action game.

Control: Ultimate Edition (2020)

by game_tinkerer  •
Control: Ultimate Edition
Game
8.5/10on IGDB
Released
The early corridors and gunfights can make Remedy's strange office seem less physically playful than it becomes. The Launch ability in the second main mission, Unknown Caller, is an early reassessment point: throwing the environment starts to connect the supernatural premise to the fighting. Further powers arrive later. Continue if that combination appeals, with difficult encounters adjustable through Assist Mode; the deliberately cryptic storytelling and labyrinthine building remain.
