Silent Hill 2 (2001)

Vulnerable melodies sit beside abrasive sound and unsettling empty space in Akira Yamaoka's 2001 score. Theme of Laura is an accessible doorway, but Promise (Reprise) and Alone in the Town are essential to its melancholy character. The album lets you examine that contrast without the pressure of exploring the horror game. Look specifically for the original soundtrack: the 2024 remake has a much larger, separately recorded release.

Begin with C418's Volume Alpha and Volume Beta, the albums behind much of Minecraft's early musical identity. Subwoofer Lullaby and Haggstrom offer more than the most familiar piano theme, and Beta opens out into longer electronic pieces. In play, music's intermittent arrival is part of the experience; the albums let you follow it continuously. These releases cover C418's work, with the modern game's other composers offering further listening routes.

David Wise's SNES score is worth exploring beyond Stickerbush Symphony. Pair its floating melodic calm with Mining Melancholy's metallic rhythm to hear how varied a platformer's music can be. Keep the original recordings in your listening route to hear their distinctive synthesised colours. Nintendo Music offers official access for Switch Online members; select the SNES game's music when comparing versions.

Disasterpeace uses an electronic palette that feels familiar at first, then increasingly spacious and strange as the perspective-shifting puzzle world opens up. Adventure is an inviting start; Flow and Nocturne show a more drifting side. The soundtrack makes a satisfying standalone ambient journey, with enough melodic definition to reward attention. Its calmer exploration has a different character from the same composer's more ominous Hyper Light Drifter score.

Night in the Woods (2017)

Alec Holowka's score gives a small-town adventure its mixture of ordinary routine, autumnal warmth and dreamlike unease. Home Again and Astral Alley are useful starting points before exploring the different volumes. Begin with At the End of Everything and Hold Onto Anything; Demontower is a separate collection for the game within the game. The shorter cues make more sense grouped together, while the longer pieces can readily leave the story behind.

Max LL's music brings warmth to a game about caring for people and letting them go. At Sea and Thunder Harvest show its range between gentle travel and a more animated burst of activity. The original album works well as a reflective sequence, with acoustic colours and clear melodies carrying the feeling beyond its story scenes. Choose it when you want emotional weight without constant musical intensity.
