Boaz Yakin gives a child's observation of adult criminal systems a frightening practical intelligence. Sean Nelson makes watchfulness feel like work rather than an easy badge of precocity. Later mainstream films take a broader register, but this older debut's sharply organised relationships and patient attention to power remain the reason to seek it out.
