Andrea Arnold takes surveillance out of the abstract by giving looking a job, a location and an emotional cost. Kate Dickie's stillness makes the changes in attention matter. Fish Tank and American Honey would widen the social landscapes, but the first feature already shows how close physical observation can resist an easy judgment of a person.
