Books About Reading That Lead to More Books

A good book about reading leaves a few promising names in the margin. These memoirs, essays, guides and novels offer routes to another shelf, from Lamb and Mansfield to Russian fiction, children’s stories and Indigenous writing. The recommendations explain what you can enjoy without prior knowledge and where plot discussion or a crowded cast of literary references may matter. Start with 84, Charing Cross Road for particular appetites, My Life with Bob for the pleasures of keeping a record, or The Child That Books Built for the pull of childhood reading. The fictional books inside Calvino and Zafón are clearly marked: they lead towards traditions and other real books, rather than titles you can order. Keep whichever leads appeal; nobody is checking how quickly the notebook fills.
