The Third Policeman (1967)
6.8/10on Open Library
Published
An unnamed narrator encounters policemen whose explanatory confidence is considerably more reliable than their explanations. O'Brien makes official and scholarly language produce a world of unnerving certainty, complete with theories about bicycles. The apparently helpful account can become another means of keeping someone disoriented. Published posthumously in 1967, this is also a macabre novel of guilt and philosophical nonsense; preserve its discoveries by avoiding plot summaries before reading.
