An ageing investigator follows a pattern whose apparent absurdity does not make it safe to dismiss. Franklin J. Schaffner's thriller uses postwar Nazi fears within an explicitly fictional, scientifically fanciful conspiracy. Its place here is the movement from scattered detail to an alarming system, with a more flamboyant tone than The Conversation.
