A detective's confidence in reading personal motives proves inadequate to the arrangement of land, water and authority around him. Roman Polanski makes daylight and apparently legible locations offer little protection. The fictional story draws on Los Angeles histories without reproducing them literally, with sexual abuse and entrenched power making its conclusion exceptionally bleak.
