Debut Novels With a Voice of Their Own

A first novel can make its own rules about how a story should sound. These debuts offer comic abundance, compressed observation, lyric intimacy and sentences that take time to learn. The interest is in what the writer attempts at the beginning, rather than in reading an early book solely because its author later became famous. Start with Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit for wit and storytelling, White Teeth for a crowded social world, or Open Water for intimate rhythms. A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing and Trainspotting ask more adjustment to the language. Debut means first published novel here; earlier poetry, stories or other writing do not disqualify a book. The selection focuses on novels written in English across several literary traditions. Many address racism, sexual violence, addiction or family abuse, so the entries indicate the more demanding choices.
