Two strands follow Nina in Texas and Oli, a cottonmouth animal-person, until their worlds need one another. Little Badger has explicitly connected the novel’s structure and animal people to Lipan Apache stories she heard growing up. Climate pressures, language and care for a threatened friend make those storytelling relationships active in a contemporary future. Read this alongside Elatsoe for a very different rhythm and cast, rather than a repetition of its ghost mystery.

Joan recognises her missing husband in a preacher who insists he is someone else. Dimaline draws on the rougarou stories of her Métis community to connect that disappearance with predatory evangelism, land and colonial power. Family banter and practical help remain vital amid the threat. The creature has a specific place in these stories; reducing the novel to a generic Indigenous werewolf thriller loses its relationships and its anger.

Jared’s troubled teenage life gradually becomes entangled with Wee’git, the transforming raven of Haisla stories. Robinson brings the figure into present-day northern British Columbia without smoothing away addiction, family violence or the messiness of adolescence. Her humour can turn sharply towards horror. This opening volume of a trilogy rewards patience with the ordinary family pressures before the full supernatural inheritance becomes visible.

Mackenzie brings something back from a dream and begins to suspect that distance from home has not protected her from grief. Johns makes Cree dream knowledge and the relationships among women in a family central to understanding the danger. The horror grows through environmental damage, bereavement and isolation, with kinship offering practical ways to respond. A frightening contemporary novel whose cultural life extends well beyond identifying a monster.

Bowen connects the mermaid Simi’s imagined journey with Mami Wata water-spirit traditions and the Yoruba deity Yemoja. Her influences also include The Little Mermaid, reshaped through a West African setting and the violence of Atlantic enslavement. The deity, water spirits and heroine have distinct roles, rather than forming one interchangeable mermaid legend. First in a young adult fantasy sequence, with romance, a rescue and a consequential breach of duty.

Fatima and the mapmaker Hassan flee the last Muslim court at Granada, helped by a jinn and by maps that can change what is possible. Attar’s Persian Sufi poem The Conference of the Birds becomes a story the friends interpret and extend while seeking refuge. Wilson joins that literary inheritance to an invented historical fantasy of friendship and freedom. Its Iberian setting also complicates any easy division between European history and Muslim storytelling.
