American Beauty (1999)

Best Picture, 2000 ceremony. Annette Bening's frantic management of appearances still gives the suburban satire an uncomfortable comic pulse. Elsewhere, a return can expose how emphatically roses, pristine surfaces and the floating plastic bag tell us to look beneath ordinary life. Lester's self-discovery receives a generous spotlight, while people around him often function as targets or revelations. The polished images remain striking; their interpretation feels increasingly prearranged.
