How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

How to Train Your Dragon

Against Dean DeBlois's 2025 live-action remake, the 2010 film's elastic faces and bodily shapes make Hiccup and Toothless's tentative communication unusually clear. The remake gives flight a substantial scale and keeps much of the relationship intact. I prefer the animated version's compact visual phrasing, where a small change of posture can carry affection without needing a larger demonstration.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)

The 2025 remake gives its human family a welcome physical warmth, but the 2002 original's shapes and animated movement make Stitch's destructiveness more inventively comic. Its Hawaiian household also has a particular hand-painted texture. I prefer the shorter film's balance between family strain and unruly invention, while recognising that the remake's revised character choices offer a different emphasis.

Moana (2016)

Compared with the 2026 live-action version, the 2016 animation lets the ocean and Maui's transformations behave with an expressive ease that suits the musical storytelling. Catherine Laga'aia's singing gives the remake a welcome warmth. My preference rests on the original's fluid movement between a girl's determination, a visual joke and a mythic change of scale.

Aladdin (1992)

Guy Ritchie's 2019 remake finds a distinct comic presence in Will Smith and gives Jasmine new musical emphasis. The 1992 original still moves more freely between romance, chase and a Genie whose changing form is the joke's grammar. Its dated cultural caricature deserves acknowledgment; preferring the animation does not make those choices disappear.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

The 2017 remake expands the characters' histories and gives the household elaborate physical detail. I find the 1991 film's clean shapes and musical transitions more expressive: a glance or an animated object's silhouette can tell the story immediately. Its shorter structure keeps the developing relationship close to the songs, with less explanatory business competing for attention.

The Jungle Book (1967)

Jon Favreau's 2016 remake makes the forest and its dangers impressively tangible around its live-action Mowgli. The 1967 animation is the version I favour for loose musical companionship and the different bodily rhythms of Baloo and Bagheera. The relaxed structure is a preference rather than a superior realism, and both versions' inherited colonial framing merits attention.

Dumbo (1941)

Tim Burton's 2019 remake gives the circus a larger human plot and an argument about spectacle, but that expansion dilutes what I find most moving in the 1941 film's simple physical vulnerability. Animated ears and changes of scale carry the emotion quickly. The original's racist crow characterisation is a serious limitation, not an incidental detail that nostalgia erases.

Pinocchio (1940)

Robert Zemeckis's 2022 Disney remake adds photoreal detail and new material, yet the 1940 original's drawn transformations make temptation and fear more visually forceful. Its musical movement has a clarity the expanded version struggles to match for me. This comparison is with the Disney remake, distinct from Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson's separate stop-motion adaptation.
