Retellings That Give Familiar Stories a New Argument

A retelling becomes interesting when changing the viewpoint changes what a familiar story means. These books dispute heroic reputations, follow people treated as prizes or obstacles, and give inherited conflicts new social consequences. The selection moves among Greek and Roman stories, the Mahabharata and Ramayana, European fairy tales and later literary classics. These are particular writers' interpretations within traditions that already contain many versions. Each entry names the source relationship and suggests what prior knowledge is useful. Start with Unmarriageable for a warmer comedy of marriage and independence, The Penelopiad for a short challenge to heroic homecoming, or Wide Sargasso Sea for an argument with a canonical novel. Several choices contain harsh violence or adult gothic material, identified where it changes the reading experience. No single modern version settles the meaning of an older story.
