Monster (2003)

Charlize Theron's altered movement and defensive social responses matter more than treating the makeup as the whole performance. The work complicates a glamorous star image by making charm awkward, hungry and unstable. Aileen Wuornos's crimes are dramatised rather than diagnosed, and the role's force does not justify reducing a real woman's history to an awards narrative.
