Nicolas Cage's quiet attention and exhausted physical presence redirect expectations formed by his more extravagant recent genre work. The film does not discover a serious actor who had previously been absent: Leaving Las Vegas and other earlier roles already make that claim untenable. The surprise is how a restrained new context changes the familiar voice and face.
