Melissa McCarthy keeps Lee Israel's impatience and guarded need for companionship close together, using less physical expansion than many of her broad-comedy roles. The sharp delivery remains recognisably hers, but acquires a different social cost. It expanded the popular frame around her work without pretending comedy and serious character acting require unrelated skills.
