Steve Carell lets restricted movement and awkward pauses make John du Pont's authority feel both brittle and dangerous. The prosthetics matter less than how he occupies a conversation. His earlier dramatic and melancholy roles should not be erased; this was a particularly severe departure from the approachable comic-manager image many viewers brought with them.
