Hard Science Fiction That Still Cares About Its Characters

A calculation matters more when somebody has to live with the answer. These books connect scientific problems to loneliness, loyalty, work, family and responsibility. Start with The Martian for practical ingenuity or To Be Taught, If Fortunate for a short, reflective expedition. Seveneves, Red Mars and Permutation City ask for considerably more patience with technical ideas; The Spare Man lets believable spaceflight support a murder mystery. Hard science fiction here means sustained attention to constraints and consequences, with different degrees of speculation. Alien biology, simulated minds and unusual physics remain fictional assumptions, and older books carry the scientific context of their publication. The notes indicate density and tone so that enjoying the problem need not mean losing interest in the people.
