The mission's early disputes make sacrifice, scientific judgement and the pull of the sun genuinely unsettling. Pinbacker's arrival turns those pressures into a more conventional stalk-and-kill climax. Faith and obsession were present already; my objection is that embodying them in a near-superhuman pursuer narrows the crew's difficult conflict into a threat the film can physically defeat.
