The earlier courtship keeps interrupting the couple's later exhaustion, so a failing relationship cannot retrospectively make its love unreal. The ending respects that painful coexistence. A simpler reconciliation would need more than a last-minute promise to answer the patterns we have watched, while a wholly contemptuous ending would lose what once made these people choose each other.
