Ginga Force (2013)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
A vertical shooter built around a ten-stage Story Mode following pilots Alex and Margaret. Between missions, its equipment system lets you rethink main, secondary and special weapons instead of relying on whatever power-up happens to drop. That makes a difficult assignment a preparation problem as well as a piloting test. Expect some revisiting of missions as you earn credits and expand the shop's options. Choose Story for that ongoing development; Score Attack is the separate target when you want a more fixed competitive challenge.

Natsuki Chronicles (2019)
Released
Choose this for a pilot's story that moves between her rookie years and the conflict unfolding in Ginga Force. The horizontal Story Mode spans more than ten stages and builds an equipment collection, so revisiting a mission can serve a new loadout as well as a better result. You can start here without playing Ginga Force first. Japanese voices and English subtitles mean dialogue competes with the shooting for attention; the separate Arcade mode has a different progression emphasis.

Jets'n'Guns 2 (2020)
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
The campaign's continuing attraction is the arsenal: new guns, devices and equipment let you rebuild the same craft into a very different machine. Money and the between-mission shop make your loadout feel like an ongoing project, with heat management adding a constraint beyond buying the biggest damage number. Pick it for exuberant experimentation and a space-adventure frame rather than subtle drama. After the campaign, increasingly difficult repeat cycles are part of the design, so its long tail deliberately returns to familiar missions.

Drifting Lands (2017)
6.0/10on IGDB
Released
This is the strongest fit if you want a shooter to behave like an action RPG. Choose a ship class, gather equipment and combine active and passive abilities into a build, then take it through increasingly demanding missions. Randomly generated sorties and a long difficulty ladder make farming and optimisation central, rather than a distraction from a tightly authored route. Choose it for the pleasure of developing a capable ship over time; Astebreed is a better fit here when you want a concentrated narrative journey.

Drainus (2022)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
Irina steals an imperial fighter to save her father, and recurring characters make the flight a personal journey as well as a succession of bosses. Absorbed energy fills tanks you can spend on ship functions and new weapons, connecting the central combat tool to the next upgrade choice. It is a focused story-led shooter rather than a large loot campaign. Choose it when you want a clear reason to keep travelling without committing to Drifting Lands' equipment farming; its later challenges still reward learning the stages.

Sky Force Reloaded (2016)
8.2/10on IGDB
Released
The paid PC game makes the hangar a continuing project: earn stars for upgrades, assemble different aircraft and collect cards with permanent or temporary benefits. Stage objectives and medals also gate progress, so simply defeating the next boss is not always enough to move on. This is a good fit when revisiting a familiar level with a stronger plane is part of the reward. It is a weaker fit if repetition feels like a toll before new scenery; the campaign intentionally asks for repeated runs.

Tyrian 2000 (1999)
6.1/10on IGDB
Released
Select the single-player Full Game for the campaign, rather than its more direct Arcade option. Shops, saved progress, destination choices and collectible data cubes turn the flight into a peculiar ongoing adventure, with story information waiting between missions. Balancing guns, shields and power generation gives the ship a lasting identity. The GOG release is a practical way to play this older DOS game on a current Windows machine. Expect old menus and a lot of text; those are part of its character as a campaign choice.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows - 2015 Edition (2015)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
A mercenary career told mainly through your bank balance and the weapons it buys. Across twenty-seven missions, collect bounties and return to the shop to improve the Raptor instead of starting each session as an anonymous underpowered craft. The lasting equipment gives successful sorties a useful payoff even when the fiction is sparse. This entry refers to the 2015 PC edition. Pick it for straightforward earning and upgrading; Tyrian offers more story text and stranger detours if you want a livelier narrative companion.

Astebreed (2013)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
The updated PC Definitive Edition puts a young pilot and an altered girl's intertwined story at the centre of a compact mecha adventure. Shooting, target-locking and sword attacks carry you through changing perspectives, while added episodes and scenes expand the character framing. It is a good choice when you want to follow a dramatic sequence rather than farm equipment until the numbers rise. The Japanese dialogue continues during action, with English text to read, so expect attention to be split when the battle becomes busy.

Sine Mora EX (2017)
6.9/10on IGDB
Released
Story Mode gives its changing pilots and wartime revenge plot a more prominent role than an arcade cabinet's opening premise. Time is also the survival resource, so taking damage and earning extensions remain part of the journey rather than a detached health system. Choose EX for its English voice option if reading dialogue during flight is a problem. This is a dark adult story with strong language and references to sexual violence, despite the animal cast; its narrative appeal is very different from the lighter Stardust campaign.

Super Hydorah (2017)
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
Choose a route through a non-linear campaign, equip the ship for the next assignment and push planet by planet against the invasion. Its twenty-one levels make the map a journey to explore, with secrets and multiple endings giving later visits a purpose beyond a higher score. The campaign framing does not make it forgiving: terrain and checkpoint recoveries can demand repeated attempts. Pick it for an expedition through handcrafted worlds, accepting that progress still rests heavily on learning the flight path.

Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax (2015)
9.0/10on IGDB
Released
A ten-level campaign gives the robot team a light, joking story to carry between battles. Weapons, upgrades and distinct mechs add enough development to make the group feel like a continuing project without turning it into a full RPG. It also supports solo play or up to four local players, with generous settings for health, shields and other rules. Choose it for a flexible campaign you can share on the sofa; its character humour and light progression are the attraction, rather than a complex dramatic plot.

Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours (2015)
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
Choose the single-player CS Mode for a long mission-map project spanning more than two hundred stages and the series' timeline. Clearing routes and adapting to assigned situations gives individual sessions a place in a larger campaign, while the single-monitor layout is more practical than the arcade mode's extremely wide picture. This is primarily a shooting itinerary rather than a dialogue-rich character story. Keep it separate from AC Chronicle's shared virtual-cabinet progression, and do not mistake its stage count for hundreds of wholly different environments.
