Tyrian 2000 (1999)

Select the single-player Full Game for the campaign, rather than its more direct Arcade option. Shops, saved progress, destination choices and collectible data cubes turn the flight into a peculiar ongoing adventure, with story information waiting between missions. Balancing guns, shields and power generation gives the ship a lasting identity. The GOG release is a practical way to play this older DOS game on a current Windows machine. Expect old menus and a lot of text; those are part of its character as a campaign choice.
