Alternate Histories Where One Change Really Changes the World

A changed election, a surviving public figure or a different encounter can alter far more than a flag on a map. These books follow the consequences into work, language, religion, family life and the institutions deciding who holds power. The starting changes range from plausible political turns to invented technologies and supernatural events; the descriptions distinguish each fictional premise from the history it replaces. The emphasis is on what the author builds from that premise, rather than on treating the result as a prediction. Start with The Plot Against America for family life, The Difference Engine for technology and class, or The Years of Rice and Salt for a much wider historical sweep. Pavane and Ruled Britannia trace different consequences of a victorious Armada; the British wartime alternatives distinguish occupation from negotiated compromise. Some choices are fierce satires or fantasies, and several deal closely with racism and state violence. Their useful question is how a changed world reorganises ordinary people's possibilities.
