Thrillers Set in Remote Places Where Help Is Difficult to Reach

Distance is only one way to be cut off. These novels make rivers, mountain weather, polar seasons, open water or a pressurised workplace shape what people can do next. The River is a strong starting point for capable travellers; The Chamber makes escape impossible for a different physical reason, and Ice Station Zebra puts the rescue operation itself at the centre. Other choices follow inexperienced visitors whose dependence on a group matters as much as their equipment. The notes distinguish survival stories, police investigations and enclosed mysteries. Paver, Simmons and Scott Smith bring supernatural horror into the selection, clearly signposted for readers who prefer human threats. Expect violence, exposure, bereavement and some graphic horror.
