First Reformed (2018)
Movie
Released
A pastor's spiritual crisis gathers environmental fear, guilt and a dangerous wish for an absolute response. Paul Schrader's ending changes the film's severe emotional temperature so sharply that grace and subjective escape become competing ways to read it. It is rewarding to compare what the images permit with what you need them to mean, without reducing the film to a verdict on its protagonist.
