A two-player partnership can combine Galandra's broad sword attacks with Brome's ranged magic, or use Cider's mobility to complement Karl's close-range fists and blunderbuss. Galandra and Karl are the starting choices; the other two must be unlocked. Brome is an offensive caster, so do not choose him expecting a dedicated healer. Roguelite upgrades change the partnership from run to run. Local co-op requires controllers, and Mystic Ordeal modifiers can alter the rules, including adding friendly fire.
