Noir Novels About Choices That Tighten the Trap

A quick solution to a money problem can become the first instalment of a much larger debt. These novels follow people who steal, conceal, betray or convince themselves that one more compromise will buy an exit. The range runs from American roadside crime to Australian heists, French class warfare, Japanese working lives and a corrosively funny family trap in Lagos. Noir here means consequences that grow from character and circumstances, rather than a police investigation made atmospheric by darkness. Not everyone caught in the machinery is guilty: some books expose who is allowed to be believed. The notes distinguish short, sour shocks from longer descents and explain when sexual violence, cruelty or despair make a recommendation particularly demanding. Start with Cain for concentrated self-deception, Higgins for conversations with a price attached, or Braithwaite for a sharper comic edge.
