Incendies (2010)
Movie

Two letters in a mother's will send her children into a history they scarcely understand. The investigation and the earlier life gradually illuminate one another, giving information an emotional weight beyond its usefulness as a clue. Denis Villeneuve makes the unravelling devastating rather than playful. Its wartime violence makes this one of the list's heaviest choices.
