Rival magicians spend their lives deciding what an audience will notice and what it will accept without looking. Christopher Nolan makes that same bargain with the viewer. The period detail and escalating obsession are absorbing on their own, but the extra pleasure is watching a film about misdirection demonstrate it in its own construction.
