The frightened child and the psychologist trying to reach him give the mystery a tender centre. Quiet pauses, carefully framed encounters and ordinary spaces made unfamiliar do much of the unsettling work. Even if its reputation precedes it, the film rewards close attention to how emotional understanding and the supernatural investigation develop together.
