King Kong (1933)
Movie
Released
An expedition turns a living creature into an attraction, making the act of exhibiting him part of the disaster. The stop-motion performance gives Kong an expressive presence inside a film already fascinated by spectacle's cost. The oldest exception is useful for seeing how early creature cinema could make human appetite central. Its racist caricatures and colonial fantasy are ugly parts of the experience, which the technical achievement does not cancel.
