The enormous yew-tree visitor offers a boy stories when what he wants is a simple answer about his mother's illness. J. A. Bayona uses changes of visual style to make difficult feelings something Conor can approach indirectly. The creature's scale matters because his emotional problem feels larger than the adults' explanations. A powerful choice for grief and conflicting wishes, with bullying and serious illness making it far from an easy family diversion.
