Björk

Marjan Pejoski's swan dress at the 2001 Oscars still offers a useful challenge to solemn red-carpet taste. Its long neck and head made an animal shape part of the garment, carrying humour into an occasion usually governed by polished formality. Björk is rewarding to follow when clothes operate as an imaginative extension of an artist's world. Allow room for the joke as well as the craftsmanship; seriousness is not the only route to a memorable design.
