Returning to an F-14 supplies an escape vehicle after the mission goes wrong, rather than a museum exhibit inserted for applause. Maverick's familiarity with the older aircraft becomes useful, while Rooster has to trust and work with him inside it. The callback to the original film's jet therefore tests their repaired relationship under pressure and makes nostalgia part of the action's mechanics.
