Spelunky 2 (2020)

by game_tinkerer  •
Spelunky 2
Game
7.7/10on IGDB
Released
Your explorer's basic strength does not rise because you have died fifty times. New characters are cosmetic, while unlocked shortcuts let you practise later areas with a limited starting kit. A full journey still asks you to earn its equipment along the way, and some deeper routes need items from the opening areas. Choose this for improvement you can feel in safer jumps and better reactions. Unlocking a shortcut is useful practice, rather than buying a stronger version of the same explorer.

Jupiter Hell (2021)

by game_tinkerer  •
Jupiter Hell
Game
7.6/10on IGDB
Released
The shotgun looks immediate, but every move, reload and shot advances a turn. Perks and equipment build the current marine; dying does not leave you a purse for increasing the next one's health. Persistent achievements and unlocked challenges record progress without turning failure into an automatic stat boost. It suits someone who wants to test a different build against the same demanding rules. Learn when to reload and retreat before interpreting a failed attempt as an under-levelled account.

Rift Wizard 2 (2025)

by game_tinkerer  •
Rift Wizard 2
Game
Released
A huge spellbook gives you build decisions without first purchasing account-wide damage bonuses. Spell points, equipment and the synergies they create belong to the current journey, so a failed combination sends you back to designing, not funding a stronger wizard. Choose the completed second game for its equipment-led variation; the newer third game is a separate Early Access choice. The difficulty is severe, and knowing how your build covers different enemies matters more than repeating an easy opening for currency.

Cobalt Core (2023)

by game_tinkerer  •
Cobalt Core
Game
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
Moving a spaceship out of a firing line makes each card decision feel tangible. Crew members bring different cards, and later runs unlock more characters, ships and story memories without retroactively increasing an old character's base strength. That makes changing the team a new problem to solve rather than the next rung of a health ladder. The story deliberately unfolds over repeated successful loops, so one run is not the whole narrative. Pick it for useful variety between attempts and a compact tactical language.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (2006)

by game_tinkerer  •
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Game
9.1/10on IGDB
Released
Species and background choices are a starting menu, not a reward track you fill by losing. Your skills, equipment and god relationship develop during the current dungeon expedition, then the next character must earn their own. This is the choice for a long, uncompromising build whose success rests on resource decisions and knowing when to leave a fight. Persistent scores give you a record to improve; they do not purchase better starting attributes. Use Tutorial or Hints mode to learn the interface.

Brogue (2009)

by game_tinkerer  •
Brogue
Game
Released
No class-unlock screen asks you to earn the interesting build first. What you find in the dungeon, and where you spend its scarce enchantments, determines the character you become. A new expedition starts that process again instead of inheriting a trained adventurer. Use Community Edition, the continuation recommended by the original creator. It is particularly appealing if you want a fixed starting baseline and equipment-led improvisation, with patient learning replacing a catalogue of permanent perks.

Cogmind (2017)

by game_tinkerer  •
Cogmind
Game
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
You build a robot from parts you find or salvage, and can abandon a damaged combat build for a faster or stealthier one during the same run. There is no experience-point grind or account-wide stat shop funding the next robot. The part gallery and discovered lore persist as useful knowledge, while your working machine must be assembled again. It remains in Early Access with a substantial journey already playable. Choose it when adapting to what survives sounds more interesting than steadily strengthening a permanent character.

Golden Krone Hotel (2016)

by game_tinkerer  •
Golden Krone Hotel
Game
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
Disguises change your starting strengths and special abilities, but the built-in unlock-everything option lets you skip earning access to that menu. After choosing one, the hotel still demands that you manage human and vampire forms, light and supplies within the run. This is a useful middle ground if you like different starting classes but dislike repeating runs just to open the character menu. The option opens choices; it does not replace learning how a fragile human and a light-sensitive vampire survive.

Slay the Spire (2019)

by game_tinkerer  •
Slay the Spire
Game
8.4/10on IGDB
Released
The original game's deck and relic engine must be assembled afresh on each climb. Early score-based unlocks expand the card and relic pools, while victories open harder Ascensions and access to the later act. Your previous run also affects the choice of starting blessing, so it is not an identical blank slate every time. What you cannot do is buy a permanent damage level for the Ironclad. Choose it for learning which card solves this run's problem, with a complete, established ruleset beside the sequel.

Balatro (2024)

by game_tinkerer  •
Balatro
Game
8.6/10on IGDB
Released
A Joker does not keep its enormous multiplier when the run ends. You rebuild the scoring engine from the next deck and shop, while specific accomplishments unlock more Jokers, vouchers, decks and higher stakes. Those new options can be powerful; they are not all available immediately or equally forgiving. If access itself feels like a grind, the profile's Unlock All option skips it, with achievements disabled on that profile. Keep a separate ordinary profile if earning the collection is part of the appeal.

FTL: Faster Than Light (2012)

by game_tinkerer  •
FTL: Faster Than Light
Game
8.4/10on IGDB
Released
Scrap buys shields, weapons and systems for the ship currently trying to escape the fleet. Losing that ship does not bank those upgrades for another Kestrel. What persists is access to unlocked ships and layouts, whose starting equipment can differ substantially in strength as well as style. Choose it for mastering a familiar vessel before trying a new tactical problem. Unlock hunts can be lengthy and partly dependent on events, but you do not need a completed hangar to attempt an ordinary victory.

Dicey Dungeons (2019)

by game_tinkerer  •
Dicey Dungeons
Game
7.4/10on IGDB
Released
Each character and episode changes what a useful dice roll means, from a straightforward attack to a tightly constrained equipment puzzle. Playing and completing episodes unlocks further contestants and rule sets; it does not permanently add damage to the Warrior you already know. That is a good fit if you enjoy a sequence of fresh challenges rather than endlessly levelling one starting build. Expect real content gates, including later episodes that require wins. A new episode can be much harder, not simply a better reward.

Slice & Dice (2021)

by game_tinkerer  •
Slice & Dice
Game
8.0/10on IGDB
Released
In Classic, five heroes gain levels and equipment during one attempt through twenty encounters. Losing the party resets that build. Achievements unlock more heroes, items and modes, but the native Bypass Unlocks setting lets you open the more complicated options without farming access. Choose this if you want to test tactical decisions with a small party and many possible dice combinations. The undo tool helps reconsider actions; it is not a promise that you can endlessly resample a bad roll.

Downwell (2015)

by game_tinkerer  •
Downwell
Game
7.4/10on IGDB
Released
Gem totals unlock palettes and a small set of starting styles, while gun modules and upgrades for a descent are earned again inside that attempt. The styles do affect power: Boulder begins with extra health but offers fewer upgrade choices and a faster fall. That bounded preset choice is a different bargain from repeatedly buying another permanent heart. Use the default style for a consistent baseline, then try another handling model when you want the same well to ask a different movement question.

Nuclear Throne (2015)

by game_tinkerer  •
Nuclear Throne
Game
7.2/10on IGDB
Released
Radiation grows the mutant during the current run; another death does not buy an extra permanent mutation slot. Characters and crowns unlock, however, and golden starting weapons or a weapon stash can carry an advantage between attempts. Keep the ordinary starter and no crown if you want a cleaner baseline. This belongs as a low-grind action choice rather than a zero-carryover purist pick: reading a lethal room and managing ammunition still matter far more than filling a permanent health bar.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon (2014)

by game_tinkerer  •
Shattered Pixel Dungeon
Game
7.0/10on IGDB
Released
Strength potions, upgraded equipment and talents build this hero, rather than making every future hero stronger. Other classes, challenges and journal discoveries unlock through play. There is a small exception to a clean reset: a predecessor's remains can leave a signature consumable and an eligible item, with equipment subject to limits and curses. You can leave those remains alone. Choose it for careful, equipment-led dungeon attempts without a permanent upgrade shop, while recognising that loss does not erase every possible benefit.
