A Monster Calls (2016)
Movie

The yew-tree giant is not especially interested in giving Conor an easy answer. His imposing shape and Liam Neeson's voice make that refusal feel both frightening and strangely dependable. You root for his difficult kindness: the stories give a grieving child room for feelings that polite reassurance cannot hold. Choose this monster for emotional honesty rather than cuddly comfort, with serious illness and bereavement inseparable from the experience.
