Dickens's changing households become a bright, bustling ensemble comedy in Armando Iannucci's adaptation. It offers rooms, faces and verbal energy to get pleasantly lost in, while David's search for a place remains easy to follow. Childhood cruelty and hard labour survive the buoyant presentation, so the warmth comes from finding allies rather than denying hardship.
