People Whose Correspondence Reveals an Extraordinary Mind

For a biography reader, letters can reveal how an idea is tested, explained or turned into a piece of work. These are my choices across science, literature, art, philosophy and public life, using authenticated correspondence published in edited collections or institutional archives. The interest lies in intellectual range and craft, with the replies and editorial context helping the reader follow each exchange. This fixed selection offers starting routes through collections available in English or translation. Extraordinary expresses my judgement about what the letters reveal.
