A spoof of a cancelled space series could have survived as a bag of borrowed references. Instead, the actors' bruised egos gradually become the raw material of a functioning crew. Alan Rickman's resistance to his own catchphrase is funny because the character has somewhere to go. The fans' knowledge also becomes useful rather than merely embarrassing. That affection makes the comedy welcoming even if you have never argued about a starship, with the ensemble doing more lasting work than recognition alone.

About Galaxy Quest
For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector — Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, Lieutenant Tawny Madison, and Doctor Lazarus — set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space... until their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for "historical documents" and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director, and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.
