The Armitages' enthusiastic welcome is unsettling because their compliments keep turning Chris into a subject for inspection. Jordan Peele gives friendly conversation a precise imbalance of power: the hosts can congratulate themselves on being welcoming while their guest must decide how much discomfort to acknowledge. Daniel Kaluuya's listening and guarded responses make the polite surface as important as the eventual horror.

Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parents for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.
