The Gift (2015)

A present is difficult to reject without appearing hostile, and an old school acquaintance knows how to exploit that hesitation. Joel Edgerton builds the tension through repeated visits, awkward gratitude and competing accounts of the past. Rebecca Hall's uncertainty gives the social discomfort real weight. The film is especially effective when being agreeable starts to look indistinguishable from letting someone take control.
