The Wailing (2016)
Movie
Released
A village illness draws a South Korean policeman into competing explanations, accusations and rituals. The force of the film lies in how badly he needs certainty: each new authority seems briefly persuasive. Na Hong-jin lets comedy curdle into a long, exhausting dread, with shamanic performance and religious imagery complicating the mystery rather than supplying a tidy folklore lesson.
