Under the Skin (2014)

Glasgow's everyday conversations become unnerving when the woman conducting them seems to be studying human behaviour from outside it. Familiar streets give way to stark spaces with almost no reassuring bearings, while Mica Levi's score makes seduction feel like an approaching mechanism. Sexual threat, child distress and disturbing bodily imagery make this hard viewing despite its sparse approach. Its fear comes from estrangement and patient anticipation rather than repeated ambushes.
